Just completed the Dales Highway in 6 days with Brigantes providing great service as usual moving our bags as well as sorting accomadation along the way. The walk is demanding as compared to its compatriate The Dales Way. There are some good climbs like Ingleborough, Whernside (optional) and the Howgills which we still managed to do in a raging gale. The climbs on there own are no problem but if you mix in long mileage as well then it does get tiring. The second day in particular just over twenty miles from Skipton to Settle included over 850m ascending would test anybody. The walk as a whole is fantastic especially for those looking for something different when passing through the Dales, most paths are good and generally easy to follow. In general an exhillarating and challenging walk that takes in many unseen parts of the Yorkshire Dales.
Walked the Dales Highway in July 2023 in six days. Brigantes organised accommodation and did baggage transfer. As usual they did a fantastic job. We found the first day very long (it was extremely hot) but made up for that by having two shorter days afterwards, staying in Malham. The descent from Ingleborough is pretty hairy but OK as long as you use all limbs available! The Howgill Fells were probably the highlight – a sensational walk along their length. At the end we got the train back from Appleby which is a great finish if it fits into your schedule.
A bit of advice – the hospitality industry is having a tough time so check that pubs are open on the day you need … and book early – the trail passes some small places with limited accommodation.
We have recently completed the Dale’s High Way over 6 days. A fabulous route, quite a challenge over this timescale but very rewarding. Thanks Annette and the team for an impeccable service as ever. Thoroughly recommend both the route and Brigantes, Chris
We walked the bottom half of the Dales High Way in 2022 and have just completed the top half in May 2023. We walked the top half southwards from Appleby to Ribblehead. It is full of interest. In Appleby we enjoyed the Lady Anne Clifford connections – the castle, the alms houses and the family tombs in the church. There is lovely riverside walking along Hoff Beck past the delightful Rutter Mill. Then up onto the fine limestone pavement of Great Asby Scar. From the top we had fantastic views of the Howgills, the Lakeland peaks and the Pennine range north of Appleby. We had fine weather on the Howgills – great ridge walking. An interesting route from Sedbergh over Rise Hill into Dentdale. Dent is a real living village, with its shop, its school and its church & chapel – and lots of history. Finally a climb over the northern nose of Whernside, with views of the Settle and Carlisle line snaking round the head of Dentdale over the Arten Ghyll viaduct, and then down hill past the amazing Ribblehead Viaduct to the Station Inn. Very satisfying.
Having enjoyed the Dales Way in 2021, we wanted to try the Dales High Way in 2022. We knew it would be more demanding, and as we are not getting any younger we decided to do just the first half, from Saltaire to Stainforth. We had a very good time, and the weather was wonderful. Each day included some high points with fine views, and the walk lived up to its name. We heard and saw lots of birds, and we enjoyed the history – Saltaire village and Skipton church and castle were fascinating. We were well looked after by our B&Bs. We want to get back soon to complete the walk.
Perhaps not as well known as some long distance paths in Northern England, The Dales Highway compares very favourably. It is easily accessible by rail at both ends and at interim points if required, can be walked within a week or little more, and showcases all the different landscapes of this area: moorlands, limestone pavements, dales and high peaks. And there is the opportunity to visit the Yorkshire institution that is Betty’s in Ilkley!
From our first approach to Annette to our final departure homeward bound we were impressed with every feature of Brigantes: swift, insightful and sympathetic responses; comprehensive information that was always accurate; excellent accommodation hosted by welcoming hosts at all locations and seamless baggage movements.
We are certain to use Brigantes again and would have no hesitation in recommending them and/or this trail.
Thanks again Brigantes. This is the fourth time you’ve arranged a walking holiday for me and, as ever, everything went seamlessly well. I can’t praise too highly your efficiency
and attention to detail. You even managed to order the weather this time ( how do you do that?).
Here’s to my next adventure.

The baggage transfers you arranged for my partner and myself during our completion of the last few stages of the Dales High Way (from Ribblehead to Appleby) worked perfectly. Thank you so much for arranging it at short notice – much appreciated. I’m not sure what our next walking project will be, but we will certainly contact you again if we need help with either accommodation or baggage.
The Dales High Way is challenging with frequent long uphill stretches, but well worth it for the beautiful countryside and fine views. You do need to be reasonably fit to enjoy it.
We have had several holidays with Brigantes and our accommodation has always been good/excellent, with baggage transfers which have worked to perfection.
Annette is invariably helpful and responds quickly to any queries or concerns.
Brigantes provided us with an excellent baggage transportation service for The Dales High Way. We had walked from Saltaire to Appleby in 2018 and enjoyed the walk so much we decided to walk from Appleby to Saltaire this year. Brigantes made this possible with their reverse baggage handling. Thank you.
I just wanted to say thank you for the brilliant service. The walk was made much lore enjoyable for not carrying a heavy load, especially since it was so hot. Your courier was fantastic, polite friendly and efficient. It was great to arrive at our destination to find the bags there ready and waiting. Once again thank you for your service. Martin Golds 2017
