Walk Information

The Lake District has always been one of the finest tourist destinations in the country, popular with travellers from the 18th Century onwards, and it remains a firm favourite today, with many visitors from both Britain and overseas. There are many special features within this small area, which include spectacular mountain scenery, quiet lakes, pretty villages, and friendly, bustling market towns containing ancient castles, monuments, and fine old houses, and most of the route is within the renowned Lake District National Park.

The Cumbria Way starts in Ulverston, at the southern edge of the Lake District, and follows a generally northward route through some of the best scenery of the area to the ancient city of Carlisle, a distance of some 71 miles.

Mobile Digital Mapping
Digital maps can be viewed on most modern smartphones using an appropriate app, downloaded from the app store associated with your device. Brigantes recommend that whichever app you use, it should support Ordnance Survey 1:25k or 1:50k scale maps. There are many apps to choose from, but the two main providers are Ordnance Survey and Memory Map.

Each provider’s app has its own benefits, but both provide all-important offline navigation, meaning your device does not need a mobile signal to work effectively on the trail.

  1. Just finished the Cumbria Way and the organisation/accommodation provided through Brigantes was excellent. Many thanks to them for taking the “admin” pressure off. Its not the first time I’ve used them and it won’t be the last.

  2. A group of us have just finished the Cumbria Way and for third time used Brigantes for transporting our baggage to and from our accomodation. The service is first class. Prior to starting this walk our numbers changed several times but not an issue for Brigantes! Even on the walk any queries or doubts (I am a bit of a worrier!) were quickly dealt with by Annette no matter what time! This year we were returning the same day we finished the walk and Brigantes were able to suggest a collection point right beside Carlisle train station which was perfect!! Many thanks again Brigantes!

  3. This the third time we have used Brigantes to organise a long distance walk. Their arrangements for the overnight stays and the luggage transfers worked very well (as usual!) and we had an excellent week on the scenic Cumbria Way.

  4. We’ve just completed the Cumbria Way and used Brigantes for the transfer of our luggage between hotels. As usual, the service provided by Brigantes was first class and fantastic value for money. In the past we used to carry everything ourselves which seems like a crazy idea now we’ve used this service a couple of times. Arriving at a hotel after a hot and tiring day to find your cases waiting for you is absolutely worth every penny. Fantastic, friendly service, wholeheartedly recommended.

  5. We have just completed the Cumbria Way and, as ever, Brigantes were superb with all their arrangements. The details of the route were very clear and their choice of accommodation was excellent. We walked it over six days and having the two shorter legs on the third and fourth days meant we could our take our time and enjoy the Lake District’s stunning scenery. Looking forward to choosing our next walk with Brigantes for 2022. Special thanks to Annette.

  6. Recently walked The Cumbria Way and used Brigantes luggage service.
There are two really good sections Keswick to Caldbeck and Elterwater to Rosthwaite.
Overall I would recommend this walk and in particular Brigantes. No problems with luggage pick-up and delivery and they are easy to contact if any problems.

  7. Just a note to thank you for your service on our walking holiday last week (9 to 15 August 2020). We walked the Cumbria Way from north to south. Everything was spot on and we met a couple of your drivers who were very friendly and accommodating.

I will certainly bear you in mind for our next walking holiday!

  8. We really enjoyed our 3 days walking the Cumbria Way from Coniston to Keswick, with another rest day in Keswick. Thank you, Brigantes, for organising it so well – our accommodation was very comfortable, clean and welcoming; our bags and taxis arrived arrived safely and on time. You were always responsive to emails and phone calls. This is the second time we have used you and would definitely do so again. Our favourite part of the walk was from New Dungeon Gyll to Stonethwaite – along Langdale Fell/Valley, over Stake Pass and into the Langstrath Valley. It was fairly demanding but we were rewarded with spectacular views. We enjoyed eating out along the way, especially in Ambleside (Zefferelli’s), Rosthwate (the Scafell Hotel Walker’s Bar) and Keswick (Fell Pack).

  9. Ruth Swire and Christina Dandy;
Brilliant service by you all at Brigantes.
The bags were collected and delivered as expected…lovely to see them at each destination…We would definitely use you again and Thankyou to Annette for replying and helping us with any queries along the way.

I will be recommending you to any fellow travellers who want a fab service..

    Thanks again!!!! 10/10..x

  10. Thank you so much to your wonderful and professional company, our bags were delivered safely to every accommodation along the Cumbrian way, we will definitely be using you again on our next long distance walk and will certainly recommend your services to friends and family

  11. Dear Annette,

We really enjoyed walking The Cumbria Way. Everything was organised by you very efficiently and we had a fantastic time. All of the accommodation worked out very well and was of a good standard, all baggage transfers were seamless and the taxis transfers were on time and easy.

    Thank you!

We are now looking forward to The Pennine Way in July and August.

    Best Wishes,

    Janice Darch and Steve Ecclestone

  12. Thanks Brigantes for a most enjoyable Cumbria Way trip. This is the third long distance walk, organised by you, that I’ve been on and, as ever, everything worked like clockwork. Looking to do another next year so you’ll definately be hearing from me again

  13. Thank you for organising our baggage transfer on the Cumbria Way. Our bags arrived safely each day and you were the only firm that would deliver bags from North to South.

  14. Thank you once again for your seamless service with our bag transfers on the Cumbria Way – it’s a lovely route and made all the nicer by not having to carry much weight. Having used the service without a hitch on different routes on several occasions I never have a moments anxiety about whether my bags will have arrived when I get to my destination. The making of the holiday – thanks!

  15. You have helped me out a few times, even with an uncharted route. You’re definitely on my list of useful outfits.

  16. Just wanted to say thank you. It is the first time we have used your company and we were very impressed. It certainly made a huge difference not carrying a full pack each day. We will certainly use you again, and would also have no hesitation in recommending you.
