Walk Information
The Northumberland coast is best known for its wide, sweeping beaches, backed by high sand dunes that are punctuated by dark whinstone outcrops. Amidst this striking landscape is the evidence of an area steeped in history, covering 7000 years of human activity. A host of conservation sites, including two National Nature Reserves, testify to the great variety of wildlife and habitats also found on the coast.

The Northumberland coast offers some of the finest coastal walking in Europe. The Northumberland Coast Path follows this stunningly beautiful coastline for 100 kilometres (62 Miles) from Cresswell in the south to Berwick-upon-Tweed in the north. Alongside sandy beaches, over rocky headlands, past dramatic castles and through attractive coastal villages, the Northumberland Coast Path offers a constantly changing landscape which is a pleasure to explore.

The route follows the coast in most places with an inland detour between Belford and Holy Island. Most of the paths are public rights of way (footpaths and bridleways) but in some places beaches, minor roads, tracks and permissive paths are used. The route is generally level with very few steep climbs. Most stiles along the route have been replaced with gates and the walking surfaces are generally good, although some sections of the path can become muddy in winter or after heavy rain.

Mobile Digital Mapping
Digital maps can be viewed on most modern smartphones using an appropriate app, downloaded from the app store associated with your device. Brigantes recommend that whichever app you use, it should support Ordnance Survey 1:25k or 1:50k scale maps. There are many apps to choose from, but the two main providers are Ordnance Survey and Memory Map.

Each provider’s app has its own benefits, but both provide all-important offline navigation, meaning your device does not need a mobile signal to work effectively on the trail.

  1. Brigantes helped us out at the last minute to add part of the Northumberland Coastal path to the end of our St Cuthberts way, we had booked this with someone else who were unable to help us with this last day. Brigantes were really helpful, great B&B and we would definitely use them again
    Bo, Norfolk

  2. This is an outstanding walk with empty beaches and imposing castles. It is an easy walk along the coast but offering plenty of variety. Brigantes’ organisation was excellent and the accommodation was both comfortable and convenient, particularly given the pressure on places to stay in holiday hot spots as lockdown eased. Brigantes also organised a stay on Lindisfarne which, strictly speaking, is not part of the official Northumberland Coast walk but is an experience which should not be missed!

  3. As on previous occasions Brigantes provided excellent service for our walk on the Northumberland Coast.Indeed for this holiday they really went the extra mile. The Corona pandemic meant we had to cancel our walk in July but thanks to Brigantes we were able to switch to late September early October. Problems arose again however and in order to comply with Govt regulations a number of last minute changes to our accommodation became necessary all handled with speed and professionalism by Annette.
Accommodation was of a high standard with a nice mix of homely B&Bs and hotels. It was a lovely walk and I fully recommend Brigantes for those who prefer to let someone else do the planning and booking etc

  4. Brigante did a great job organising my Northumberland Coast Walk in the springtime. Outstanding accommodation and reliable luggage transfers. Good value which I recommend for this beautiful , scenic and historic coast.
