Lancashire Coastal Way (Option 1)
66 miles along the Lancashire coast to the edge of the Lakes

The Coastal way is a 66 mile footpath following the coastline between Merseyside and Cumbria. The Lancashire coastline, much of which is of international ornithological interest comprises distinctive limestone scenery of Arnside / Silverdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, through grazed saltmarshes and agricultural land, the seaside resorts of Morecambe and Blackpool and the Fylde coast, as well as the major river estuaries of the Lune, Wyre and Ribble.

This route walks inland alongside the River Wyre and does not rely on the Fleetwood ferry service. If you would rather walk that route, use this option.

Walk Information

The Lancashire coastline has a variety of landscapes from the distinctive limestone scenery of Arnside and Silverdale, saltmarshes and agricultural land and the seaside resorts of Morecambe and Blackpool and the Fylde coast. Lancaster and Carnforth are passed en route. There are major river estuaries of the Lune, Wyre and Ribble with much birdlife.

We conclude this route at Lytham, where there is a choice of accommodations, rather than continuing to Freckleton, the official finish, where there is no accommodation available at this time.

There is evidence of past industries based on iron, salt and limestone, alongside the modern businesses of British Aerospace, Nuclear Electric, British Gas and ICI and busy harbours at Fleetwood, Heysham and Glasson Dock and views of Morecambe Bay, the Bowland Fells and the Lake District.
