Walk Information

Ideal for followers of Alfred Wainwright, the Wainwright Way is a journey on foot through Alfred Wainwright’s life from Lancashire to the Lakes.

A 123 mile long-distance route linking the place where he was born, a Victorian terraced house in Audley Range, Blackburn, with his final resting place on Haystacks, his heavenly corner of Lakeland.

The walk, literally follows in the footsteps of Alfred Wainwright at work. It links the sights he sketched and wrote about in Lancashire and Westmorland, taking in Kendal, before entering the Lake District, the territory made so familiar by his Pictorial Guides to the Lakeland Fells.

The climax of the walk follows the final journey of Wainwright himself, as his ashes were carried onto Haystacks from Honister Pass to be scattered by the side of Innominate Tarn. From here, the walker drops down to the shores of Buttermere and visits the final memorial to Wainwright the window onto the fells in the tiny roadside church of St. James. It is a fitting end to both a memorable walk completed and a memorable life fulfilled.

Mobile Digital Mapping
Digital maps can be viewed on most modern smartphones using an appropriate app, downloaded from the app store associated with your device. Brigantes recommend that whichever app you use, it should support Ordnance Survey 1:25k or 1:50k scale maps. There are many apps to choose from, but the two main providers are Ordnance Survey and Memory Map.

Each provider’s app has its own benefits, but both provide all-important offline navigation, meaning your device does not need a mobile signal to work effectively on the trail.
