Walk Information
This walk was devised to incorporate some of the best walking in the North of England. Starting at mainline railway stations, our itineraries are designed for any walking ability.

Starting at Preston the walk follows the Ribble Way through the Ribble Valley. Shortly after Gisburn it heads eastwards to pick up the Pennine Way at Malham. The Pennine Way section incorporates the ascent of Penyghent, Great Dun Fell and Cross Fell, takes in the water fall at High Force, and the glacial valley of High Cup Nick.

The path leaves the Pennine Way at Alston and follows the South Tyne Trail, following the disused railway line to Haltwhistle, the Centre of Britain.

From Haltwhistle the walk links with the Hadrians Wall Path, heading west to complete the walk in Carlisle, an area rich with history.

Mobile Digital Mapping
Digital maps can be viewed on most modern smartphones using an appropriate app, downloaded from the app store associated with your device. Brigantes recommend that whichever app you use, it should support Ordnance Survey 1:25k or 1:50k scale maps. There are many apps to choose from, but the two main providers are Ordnance Survey and Memory Map.

Each provider’s app has its own benefits, but both provide all-important offline navigation, meaning your device does not need a mobile signal to work effectively on the trail.

One Reply to “North West Way”

  1. I walked the North West way in September 2020. Absolutely loved this walk. Varied as it covers 3 national trails. Really well signed. Easy to get to the start and return from the finish. I will be doing this walk again at some point. Highly recommend doing it.
