Walk Information
The Bracken Way is a route which was originally set out by some walkers and lovers of the Yorkshire Dales, and named after their Border Collie “Bracken”.

The walk starts in the market town of Settle and is a circular route, exploring some of the best parts of the Yorkshire Dales, including Malham with its impressive Cove, Gordale Scar and Malham Tarn, Arncliffe renowned for the Water Babies, and the original Emmerdale Farm, Kettlewell, West Burton, Wensleydale, of James Herriot fame, Dentdale, Ingleton with its impressive water falls, Ingleborough (one of the Yorkshire 3 Peaks), and finishing in Settle.

We have worked out itineraries to suit most abilities, below. Our local knowledge is second to none, being based in Littondale & Malham. With our own locally based drivers, this is a walk though not well known, will be very enjoyable for those looking for an alternative route in the Yorkshire Dales.

Mobile Digital Mapping
Digital maps can be viewed on most modern smartphones using an appropriate app, downloaded from the app store associated with your device. Brigantes recommend that whichever app you use, it should support Ordnance Survey 1:25k or 1:50k scale maps. There are many apps to choose from, but the two main providers are Ordnance Survey and Memory Map.

Each provider’s app has its own benefits, but both provide all-important offline navigation, meaning your device does not need a mobile signal to work effectively on the trail.

  1. This was our 9th walking holiday arranged through Brigantes and, as usual, we had a great time with an eclectic mix of accommodation all with helpful staff, some great food and highly enjoyable walking through varied Dales countryside. The lack of written instructions for this route made it a little harder and slower going and requires some navigational skills. Poor sign posting when away from roads made certain sections more difficult to follow. The OS map is not accurate across Walden Moor (Starbotton to West Burton) with the gently curving bridle path not existing as shown. Past the boundary stone (BS) at the watershed, the footpath leading north towards Buckden Pike should be followed until a little used path, marked by occasional wooden posts, leads north west across the boggy moor. Do not follow the surfaced shooting track heading off west. Along the lower stretches of the Walden Valley, the Bracken Way path is little used so try to head from wall style/small gate to the next, resisting taking better worn paths down towards the beck. Look out for the final section of path heading north west after a wall style near Cote Bridge. As we knew parts of the route quite well, we deviated from the Bracken Way in several places: such as walking along the River Wharfe, using the Dales Way, between Kettlewell and Starbotton; and taking the lower level Tributaries Way route between Ingleton and Austwick when weather conditions on Ingleborough were unwelcoming. Thank you for arranging it all so well to suit our wishes.

  2. We had a great time walking the Bracken Way with very varied and delightful scenery from limestone escarpments, moorland, valleys and unspoilt villages. I arranged my own accommodation and Brigantes did a great job of transporting the luggage very efficiently. The route is not waymarked but navigation is straightforward and the descriptions in the guide book very clear. A superb route which has whetted our appetite to see more of the Yorkshire dales.

  3. This is the seventh walk I’ve done with Brigantes and it just keeps getting better and better. The standard of the accommodation was good with the vast majority being excellent. The walking was varied from spectacular high moors to pretty dales. The logistics were impressive. Looking forward to the next trek.

  4. This is the seventh walk I’ve booked through Brigantes and it just gets better and better. The accommodation was all good, clean, comfortable and welcoming. The vast majority were excellent with many extra touches making them extremely pleasurable places to stay. The walk was varied with some remote upland walking as well as beautiful dales. The logistics all worked with the usual supreme efficiency. I’m a,ready looking forward to the next one.

  5. We have just finished a very enjoyable week walking the Bracken Way. It took us from tourist hotspots such as Malham, through lesser known Waldendale, where we hardly saw anyone all day, pleasant river paths and remote moorland. The final two days were spent climbing Whernside and Ingleborough.
All well organised by Brigantes. Good accommodation, and bags which magically appeared and disappeared each day.

  6. We had a wonderful time walking along the (sunny!) Bracken Way. Gorgeous scenery & views – we walked up remote hills/moorland and down green, dry-walled fields/dales and we visited some old favourites – Settle, West Burton, Dent, Hawes, Feel fitter and refreshed. The dog absolutely loved it. Even saw an osprey! Brigantes gave the usual friendly and efficient service. Thank you!
