Walk Information

A 35 mile circular walk through three of the spectacular Yorkshire Dales, Ribblesdale, Littondale & Malhamdale, taking in the ascent of one of the famous Yorkshire Three Peaks.

Day1: Settle to Horton in Ribblesdale (8.2m)
Settle is a bustling market town, with a market day every Tuesday. Home of the famous Settle to Carlisle Railway Line, you may be lucky enough to experience the sight of steam engines on the historic line. Leave Settle via the Ribble Way, mostly following the river upstream to Horton in Ribblesdale, the traditional starting point of the Three Peaks Walk. The Settle to Carlisle line runs through the village.

Day 2: Horton in Ribblesdale to Litton (10m)
Leave Horton via the Pennine Journey if you want to avoid the ascent of Pen-y-ghent, otherwise follow the path to the summit. Pen-y-ghent is 694 m (2,277 ft) high and its name is thought to have come from the Welsh for Head of the Winds, so be warned! From the summit follow the footpath over Plover Hill and join the Pennine Journey path to Foxup. From there you can either follow the river, bypassing the hamlet of Halton Gill, or take a short detour into the village, and say hello to the team in the Brigantes office! While you are here you can make use of Katie’s Cuppa’s, a do-it-yourself, honesty box tearoom (with toilet)! Rejoin the riverside footpath, and continue to Litton.

Day 3: Litton to Malham (10m)
Follow the riverside footpath to Arncliffe, of Water Babies and Emmerdale Farm fame, then continue onto Monks Lane eventually arriving at Malham Tarn, Water Sinks, Dry Valley, and descend Malham Cove (via the steps!) into Malham.

Day 4: Malham to Settle (6m)
Follow the footpath past Hill Top bunkbarn, turn left at Burns Barn, passing Butterlands Barn, and join the Dales Highway which you will then continue on to Settle.

Mobile Digital Mapping
Digital maps can be viewed on most modern smartphones using an appropriate app, downloaded from the app store associated with your device. Brigantes recommend that whichever app you use, it should support Ordnance Survey 1:25k or 1:50k scale maps. There are many apps to choose from, but the two main providers are Ordnance Survey and Memory Map.

Each provider’s app has its own benefits, but both provide all-important offline navigation, meaning your device does not need a mobile signal to work effectively on the trail.

  1. We used Brigantes for a four day circular walk in Yorkshire (Settle > Pen Y Ghent > Litton > Malham > Settle) in May 2021. Annette planned a route that was challenging yet enjoyable and easy to follow, and it was great to be able to concentrate on the walking in the knowledge that baggage and accommodation was all taken care of. The daily bag courier service worked perfectly, and the accommodation each night was spot on; friendly, comfortable and great breakfasts each morning. Special thanks too to Karen’s taxi service, and to Joy for the coffee and cake! The route itself was perfect for our first walking holiday – challenging but not too long, but with plenty of variety each day. Particular highlight was the walk along beautiful Littondale.

  2. We walked the three dales trail with baggage transfer from Brigantes which was perfect – pity we never met any of the bag carriers! The walk itself was lovely although we did go accidentally off route a few times, luckily without recourse to asking for help from fell rescue! But as novice long distance walkers it was a great start and 10-12 miles per day was perfect. It was a great experience to walk for hours without meeting another living soul (not counting sheep) through beautiful countryside.

  3. Have just completed this excellent short walk. Each day held a fresh outlook and despite the weather it was thoroughly enjoyable. As for the service provided by Brigantes – utterly seamless. From the transfer to and from our car, to the baggage transfers and the accommodation. All was excellent. We have used Brigantes for baggage service before but this was the first time we had enjoyed the full service, and will definitely do so again.
