Walk Information

This splendid 50 mile walk runs between the well known minsters at Beverley and York, visiting Arram, Scorborough, North Dalton, Lockington, Millington, Great Givendale, Bishop Wilton, Full Sutton, Stamford Bridge, Kexby and Fulford.

The route was originated in 1980, by Ray Wallis, of the East Yorkshire Area of the Ramblers’ Association, and offers a good introduction to the East Yorkshire countryside, including the Yorkshire Wolds. A December 2013 edition of the detailed guide is available, and a badge on completion.

The path crosses the chalk hills of the Yorkshire Wolds, as well as a wide variety of beautiful East Yorkshire countryside. Highlights include delightful waterside stretches along the River Derwent and along the River Ouse into York. You’ll also pass the pretty Millington Woods at Millington. The site consists of the best ancient ash woods in the Yorkshire Wolds.

The route is waymarked by white symbols depicting a view of an ecclesiastical building representing the two minsters and the words ‘Minster Way’ and delineated on OS Maps

Mobile Digital Mapping
Digital maps can be viewed on most modern smartphones using an appropriate app, downloaded from the app store associated with your device. Brigantes recommend that whichever app you use, it should support Ordnance Survey 1:25k or 1:50k scale maps. There are many apps to choose from, but the two main providers are Ordnance Survey and Memory Map.

Each provider’s app has its own benefits, but both provide all-important offline navigation, meaning your device does not need a mobile signal to work effectively on the trail.

One Reply to “Minster Way”

  1. This was one of our easier walks in terms of distance and the terrain, which is mainly flat.
We covered the 52 miles in 4 days so it wasn’t too exhausting even for two 70+ year olds. However there is a significant proportion of walking on country lanes, mainly traffic free fortunately, which increases one’s risk of blisters.
Villages with services are few and far between, so carry water and snacks.
We particularly enjoyed our stay at the Ramblers’ Rest in Millington, and the food in the pub over the road was excellent.
However one night we were miles from a village so the cost of the taxi was significant, although self-catering was available if you were happy to cook after a day’s walking. We weren’t!
The shortage of B&Bs on the walk meant that for the final night we had to be collected by taxi and taken to the Premier Inn in York and then picked up the next morning and returned to our previous day’s finishing point for our final section into York.
We have booked 6 or 7 walks with Brigantes and they are always efficient and responsive to our needs. I highly recommend Annette and her team.
