The route has been meticulously researched - Mark Reid has walked in excess of 500 miles of footpaths and bridleways over an 18-month period during the research for this book. This book is much more than the sum of its detailed maps, route descriptions, historical quotations, well-researched background and information to the area's finest scenery including the wild landscape of the Cheviot Hills, the lush Coquet Valley and the sweeping strands of the Northumbrian coastline as well as the 48 traditional country pubs along the way.
Staring and finishing at Rothbury in. the Coquet Valley, the walk charts a course through the county of Northumberland via the Overnight Stops of Warkworth, Embleton, Bamburgh, Wooler and Alwinton. Through hand drawn maps, with practical information about accommodation, services, public transport, and the ales in the hostelries along The Inn Way... to Northumberland, Mark Reid's guide gives all of the information needed to appreciate an-I enjoy the geology, wildlife and history encountered in this six day walk. Above all, the book contains a wealth of history, folklore and perceptive commentary that will help bring the landscape to life.
This walk captures the very essence of Northumberland; the wide skies and far horizons of the Cheviot Hills, the wealth of prehistoric rock in and ancient hill-forts, the turbulent history of this Border region including the mighty castles of War,-worth and Bamburgh, stunning golden beaches of Embleton and Beadnell, Farne Islands nature reserve, Craster kippers and fishing villages to name just some of the highlights.
