Herriot Way

The Herriot Way is a circular, unofficial route of 53 miles in length, in four stages of between 12 and 14 miles.  The Dales of Wensleydale and Swaledale were always very scenic and attractive, but have become renowned as a result of the popular television series, based on the books by James Herriot, " All Creatures Great and Small", and which were about his work and exploits located in these two dales.

The route starts at the famous Aysgarth Falls in Wensleydale, passes over the fells into Swaledale, and on the last day takes in a visit to Hardraw Force, England's highest single drop waterfall.  Previous to this, you will follow old lead miners tracks from high moorland to dale, passing through tranquil villages and bustling market towns, all of which deserve some of your time.

The four-day holiday is relatively short, but this will enable you to decide where you would like extend your stay, or where you would like to spend more time on a future occasion.

The map you will require to cover this route is:  OS Outdoor Leisure Sheet 30 (Yorkshire Dales Northern and Central Areas) and the usual guidebook is "The Herriot Way" by Norman Scholes.  Bayfair Publications, ISBN 0953035700, price £2-99.
