Walk Information
This walk traces the route which marks the northernmost frontier to the old Roman Empire, is 84 miles in length, and stretches from Wallsend, a suburb of Newcastle-on-Tyne in the east, to the western extremity at Bowness-on-Solway.

The Wall, including its many fortifications and extensive earthworks, was ordered to be built by the Emperor Hadrian during his visit to Brigantia in 122 AD, in order to protect his conquered territories from the local marauding and resisting indigenous peoples of the north – collectively known as the Brigantes. It is a remarkable monument to almost four centuries of Roman occupation and is now a World Heritage Site and a scheduled Ancient Monument. Within its boundaries, and in the near locality, there are also Sites of Special Scientific Interest, museums, an area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and a National Park, all easily available for the walkers education and enjoyment.

At various locations along the wall, there are also information centres, with books, maps and many other items of literature available about the area. A visit to the Roman Army Museum near Walltown Crags is a ”must” and an enlightening experience.
Walkers on this newest of our National Trails will no doubt stand in awe of the skills and achievements of the Roman surveyors and engineers, at the miles of masonry remains, and the still visible hand-dug earthworks and Vallum, all constructed within a period of six years.

By the end of their period of occupation, the Roman Empire had declined, and Britain was abandoned. The wall and its fortifications became derelict, and due to a lack of appreciation of its historical importance by local people at the time, much of the stone was taken for re-use in local field walls and buildings, and it is therefore essential that what remains of this ancient structure continues to be suitably protected by English Heritage through the Countryside Agency.

The walk is generally undertaken in seven walking days from east to west, starting at Wallsend in Newcastle and finishing in Bowness-on-Solway, with the final two nights’ accommodation taken in the city of Carlisle. The last day’s walk is from Carlisle to Bowness-on-Solway, returning to Carlisle by bus or taxi, for that last night.

Your return home, or to any UK airport from this mainline railway city is conveniently accomplished.

Mobile Digital Mapping
Digital maps can be viewed on most modern smartphones using an appropriate app, downloaded from the app store associated with your device. Brigantes recommend that whichever app you use, it should support Ordnance Survey 1:25k or 1:50k scale maps. There are many apps to choose from, but the two main providers are Ordnance Survey and Memory Map.

Each provider’s app has its own benefits, but both provide all-important offline navigation, meaning your device does not need a mobile signal to work effectively on the trail.

  1. Thank you Brigantes!
We just wanted to say a big thank you for organising our walking holiday. We’ve had a brilliant time! All your arrangements worked perfectly, including for the dog. Lovely places to stay in great locations. Taxi pick ups and drop offs were reliable and flexible. The baggage transfer worked perfectly. All round great service!
We hope to book another week of walking with you again another time.

  2. Hadrian’s Wall Path was our first trip with Brigantes. We were very pleased with the prompt and helpful communication, the carefully chosen accommodations, and reliable transfer of our baggage. Brigantes offered us a terrific combination of getting out in challenging, rugged terrain with the luxury of a warm bed and meal each day.

  3. Brigantes planned our walk along Hadrian’s Wall. Our baggage was waiting for us at each stop, communications were prompt and the accommodations they selected were excellent. Bob and Jim Baxter

  4. For the last few years, my friends and I have taken a week’s walking holiday in the north of England. For the last couple of years, we have used Brigantes for our baggage transfer (originally because of their flexibility to offer north to south transfer on the Cumbria Way). We have found their service to be very professional; no problems at all, and the staff we have met or spoken to have been very pleasant and helpful. This year’s walk was the Hadrian’s Wall path and I think it’s one of the best we have done. The first and last day (Bowness on Solway to Carlisle and Heddon to Wallsend) are perhaps a bit of a trudge, but there are still things to see, and in my opinion don’t detract from the enjoyment of the walk. There are some hefty climbs and descents but overall I don’t think they’re too taxing for experienced walkers. The remains of the Wall are quite impressive and in the central section of the walk there are some outstanding views. There are some nice places to stopover and for the most part, refreshments / comfort breaks are available en route. Note, depending on your guide book, the Eden Tea Rooms (at the Crosby on Eden golf club) is 20 minutes off route, not 10, but it was worth it for the scone! Overall a great week!

  5. Having used Brigantes many times for luggage transfers, we opted for the accommodation service as well, for our 2021 Hadrian’s Wall Walk and they didn’t disappoint. Thank you, Annette and Brigantes, for your perfect accommodation choices, friendly taxi service, and as always, smooth baggage transfers. We opted for 8 days walking, which allowed time to visit all the forts along the way as well. It’s a terrific walk, especially if you like history. We were glad we made the east to west choice, both ends have hard surfaces to contend with, but finally reaching quiet Bowness-on-Solway, on a lovely sunny day made a great end to a great walk.

  6. Back home since yesterday I already have nostalgy for Hadrian’s wall. We had nice weather, wonderful walks, heavenly bed and breakfasts, the luggage was always where it had to be, taxi drivers on time. I can only recommend it to everyone…

  7. Thanks to Brigantes we had a fantastic experience walking Hadrian’s Wall
Baggage transfer and accommodation was spot on.
We would recommend you to anyone considering a long walk with baggage transfer.
    Thanks again Dave & Wilhelmina

  8. Dear Brigantes Support team

I am sending a quick note to thank you for the arrangement to support my Hadrians Wall Walk that I successfully completed in 5 Days on 01 Aug 18. All of your arrangements with accommodation worked really well and my bag was collected and delivered every day so thanks to you and the team.

I also have to thank you for the initial planning and coordination which allowed me to organise the walk so easily.

A great walk and challenge with each day bringing different scenery and terrain as well as the fantastic views of the Roman wall.

I will definitely use you again perhaps as early as this year.

    Stephen Hilton

  9. Thank you Brigantes for making our walk along Hadrian’s Wall so straight forward. You delivered my bags to where they needed to be when they needed to be there. Your attention to detail spotted an error I had made and enabled me to resovle what could have been an issue before it became one! Thanks again

  10. During the last two weeks in May 2016 we walked 170 miles which included the Hadrian’s Wall Path. We could relax and enjoy the walk knowing that at the end of each day we would arrive at comfortable accommodation and our suitcases would be in our rooms. Many thanks to Brigantes for their amazing organisation in booking all our accommodation and their very efficient luggage transfer service. Also the help and response from Brigantes was really good during the booking period, and we look forward to another walk next year. Felicity and Peter Jones 2016
