Walk Information
The Lake District has always been one of the finest tourist destinations in the country, popular with travellers from the 18th Century onwards, and it remains a firm favorite today, with many visitors from both Britain and overseas. There are many special features within this small area, which include spectacular mountain scenery, quiet lakes, pretty villages, and friendly, bustling market towns containing ancient castles, monuments, and fine old houses. Most of the route is within the renowned Lake District National Park.
The Cumbria Way starts in Ulverston, at the southern edge of the Lake District, and follows a generally northward route through some of the best scenery of the area to the ancient city of Carlisle, a distance of some 71 miles. Any reasonably fit person can undertake the walk in a weeks holiday.
This is the Lake District, and its beauty has been created by the rain! It can rain every day, and all day, so you must come prepared to enjoy your days (and evenings) in the rain. Good wet-weather gear is therefore essential for a successful holiday. However, do not be put-off by the threat of rain, as the weather very regularly produces days of brilliant sunshine, and on these days you will not wish to be anywhere else on Earth!
For this walk, apart from providing a daily door to door baggage courier service between Ulverston and Carlisle for your heavy rucksack, we can also arrange your accommodation on a Bed and Breakfast basis (evening meals can also usually be obtained locally) at local inns, hotels, or guest houses.
The walk can be undertaken with either 6 or 7 overnight stays, the following programme of 6 night stays requiring either:
- An overnight stay in Ulverston before commencing the walk, and returning home directly from Carlisle on the last day of the walk, or...
- Commencing the walk immediately on arrival in Ulverston, and having an overnight stay in Carlisle, at the end of the walk, before returning home the next day.
